R134a
R134a is an older refrigerant used in many vehicles, particularly cars manufactured before the widespread introduction of R1234yf.
R1234yf
R1234yf is the newer refrigerant used in many modern vehicles. It became mandatory for newly type-approved vehicles in the EU from 2017, although the transition began earlier, so vehicle age alone isn't always enough to tell you which system is fitted.
Why you can't mix them
Your vehicle's air conditioning system is designed for one specific refrigerant. Using the wrong one isn't a simple substitute and can cause problems with the system.
How to find out which your car uses
