They can. Steep descents work the brakes hard and climbs load the engine and cooling system. It is not a reason to panic, just a reason to have brakes and coolant properly checked at each service.
A full service is the usual yearly choice, with an interim between if you cover a lot of miles. A major service adds further scheduled items. We can recommend the right one once we see the history.
