The MOT is an annual legal requirement for most cars and light vehicles over three years old, checking that a vehicle meets minimum roadworthiness and environmental standards. It isn't a full mechanical check-up, but it does cover the areas that matter most for safety.
What does an MOT actually check?
A test covers a wide range of areas, including lights, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust emissions, seatbelts, mirrors, and the general structure and condition of the vehicle.
- Lights, indicators and reflectors
- Tyre condition, tread depth and wheels
- Brakes and braking performance
- Steering and suspension components
- Exhaust emissions and visible corrosion or damage
When is your MOT due?
A car needs its first MOT once it turns three years old, and then annually after that. Your MOT expiry date is shown on your existing certificate, and you can check it online using your registration number if you're not sure.
What happens if your car fails?
If your car fails, you'll be given a list of the reasons why, split into categories depending on severity. A reputable garage will explain what's needed in plain terms and won't carry out repairs without checking with you first.
DB Autos provides Class 4 MOT testing at £40 and Class 7 MOT testing at £50 from its Stoke-on-Trent test centre, and can also carry out any repairs your vehicle needs following the test. Call 01782 844320 or book your MOT online.
