Plenty of MOT failures come down to small, easily preventable issues rather than major mechanical faults. Spending ten minutes checking a few basics before your test can mean the difference between a pass and an unnecessary fail.
Quick checks you can do yourself
- All lights working, including number plate lights and indicators
- Tyre tread depth and no obvious damage or bulges
- Windscreen free of cracks or chips within the driver's view
- Windscreen washers topped up and wipers in good condition
- Horn working correctly
- No dashboard warning lights showing
Why these small things matter
A single blown bulb or a low washer fluid level is enough to fail an MOT, even if the rest of the car is in excellent condition. These are quick, inexpensive fixes, so catching them beforehand avoids paying for a retest over something minor.
What's harder to check yourself
Brakes, suspension, steering and exhaust emissions are best left to a qualified technician, since assessing them properly needs the right equipment and experience. If in doubt, a quick pre-MOT check at a garage can flag anything that might cause a fail before the official test.
DB Autos can carry out a pre-MOT check alongside your test, or advise on anything spotted during the visit. Call 01782 844320 or book your MOT online to arrange a visit.
